Nonuttin’ Foods Inc. was created by the mother of a food allergic child. As such, we strive to be clear about what allergens are in the ingredients we use and what our manufacturing setup is.
We want you to feel comfortable about choosing Nonuttin' products. If you have any questions about our lines or allergens, please feel free to contact us toll free at 1-866-714-5411 or by email at info@nonuttin.com .
ALLERGENS AND GLUTEN
We require all of our ingredient suppliers to provide written declarations about what allergens/gluten are in their products on a regular basis. Further, an intensive allergen protocol including incoming ingredient testing, finished product testing, shipping and receiving policies, staff training/contracts and tracing is in place at our dedicated facility.
We have outlined below the top 11 common food allergens and gluten but have also added additional allergens that have been declared by our ingredient suppliers. Please ensure that you read the ingredient lists and product details provided every time you place an order as ingredients can change.
TOP ELEVEN ALLERGENS and GLUTEN
Dairy
No ingredients containing dairy are used in the Nonuttin' facility. This includes all derivatives such as casein or whey. Please note that we do have Kosher pareve certification through BC Kosher.
Eggs
No ingredients containing eggs are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Fish
No ingredients containing fish are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Gluten
Gluten is the term for a group of proteins commonly found in wheat, barley and rye and their variants. No wheat, barley or rye containing ingredients are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
It is a common misunderstanding that harmful gluten is present oats. In reality, the protein found in oats, avenin, is not considered harmful to the vast majority of those with Celiac disease. Traditional oats must be avoided for those with Celiac disease because of cross contamination with wheat, barley and rye due to North American farming practices.
Nonuttin' Foods Inc. is Gluten Free Certified by the 3rd party organization GFCO. We only use GFCO certified gluten free oats from a farmer-owned company that follows strict adherence to growing, harvesting, storage, milling and testing protocols. All incoming Nonuttin' ingredients, including those already certified by GFCO, and random samplings of finished product are tested for gluten following recognized testing procedures. GFCO requires testing to show all products and ingredients as below detectable levels of 10 parts per million (ppm) which is lower than the 20 ppm required by law.
For information about the suitability of pure, gluten free oats for those with Celiac disease or gluten intolerance please see the website of The Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG).
Mustard
No ingredients containing mustard are used in the Nonuttin' facility
Peanuts
No ingredients containing peanut are used in the Nonuttin' facility. All Nonuttin' staff members sign contracts to ensure they do not eat peanut products before work or bring them into any area of the Nonuttin' facility, including the lunchroom.
Sesame
No sesame is used in the Nonuttin' facility. All products except one, the 30 gram pack of caramel granola clusters, is sesame free.
For those who have sesame allergies, you need to know that the organic crisp brown rice we use is manufactured for us on the same line as one product with a small amount of whole sesame seeds (less than 1% of the ingredients). The company that manufactures this organic crisp brown rice for us has cross contamination procedures in place for ingredient storage, manufacturing schedules to minimize cross contamination and wet cleaning between product batches.
Further, we have each crisp rice order tested at an independent lab for sesame protein. The results have been consistently negative and we will continue to have all orders tested.
If, at any time, the sesame testing indicates a positive response, this document will be updated, an enewsletter will be sent out to our list of subscribers and bold notices will be posted on the website.
When manufacturing the granola product with the organic crisp rice in it, it is scheduled at the end of all other production for the day so that the granola line may be fully sanitized before any other products are run.
However, due to the difficulty in fail-safe allergen testing of particulate matter (as with the whole sesame seeds used), the Nonuttin' 30 g package of caramel granola clusters, which contain the organic crisp rice, have a sesame allergen declaration on the label. All other products indicate no sesame warning.
Shellfish
No ingredients containing shellfish (including crustaceans) are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Soy
Soy lecithin is present on the granola line in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and 70% dark chocolate chunks as a fat emulsifier.
Soybeans are packaged on the trail mix/ingredient line along with the 70% dark chocolate chunks pouches and semi-sweet mini chocolate chip pouches which contain soy lecithin.
Soy cross contamination is a possibility with all products at Nonuttin' Foods Inc. Because of this, you will see soy allergen declarations on all of our products.
Sulfites
No ingredients containing sulfite preservatives are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
Tree nuts (i.e. almonds, cashews, pecans).
No ingredients containing tree nuts are used in the Nonuttin' facility. All Nonuttin' staff members sign contracts to ensure they do not eat tree nut products before work or bring them into any area of the Nonuttin' facility, including the lunchroom.
Wheat
No ingredients containing wheat are used in the Nonuttin' facility.
ADDITIONAL ALLERGENS
Please note that if you have a food allergy that is not a top 11 food allergen, it may not be declared by our ingredient suppliers. Since these items are not Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) identified top 11 food allergens, not all suppliers may be able to verify their own supply chain for these additional allergens and therefore these must be considered voluntary declarations that may not be complete.
Celery seed
The natural flavoring we use in the granola clusters is made for us by a manufacturer who uses celery seed on the same line. The manufacturer's written declaration is that celery is not present in the natural flavoring.
Corn
Corn is present on both production lines in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and dark chocolate chunks in the form of anhydrous dextrose, a corn-based sugar.
The vanilla flavoring used in the vanilla cinnamon and vanilla caramel clusters has an ethyl alcohol base that is corn derived. The manufacturer of the ethyl alcohol states that no corn protein should remain after the alcohol distillation process.
Latex
No latex gloves are used on either Nonuttin' production line. We use only medical grade, powder-free nitrile gloves.
Sunflower oil
The dry-roasted (no oil) soybeans used in the trail mix are roasted for us by a manufacturer who uses sunflower oil on the same line for salt adhesion. Cleaning procedures are in place between products with and without sunflower oil. We have a letter from the manufacturer of the sunflower oil that states that the sunflower oil is refined, bleached and deodorized.
The manufacturer of the diced dried apple that is present on both Nonuttin' lines has indicated that sunflower oil is used on other products on its line but that the apples we use have no trace amounts of sunflower oil present.
MANUFACTURING SET-UP
The Nonuttin' facility is organized into two separate lines: the granola line (bars, granola pouches and 30 g vanilla caramel granola clusters) and the ingredients/trail mix line. These two lines have separate entrance areas, ingredient storage and staff protective clothing but they are not separated by a wall.
Manufacturing schedules are set up to minimize cross contamination between different products but it is possible to have cross contamination between varieties of like product (i.e. raisin granola bars and apple cinnamon granola bars) due to shared packaging lines.
The Granola Line
This line produces and packages all granola bars (raisin, apple cinnamon, chocolate chip and double chocolate chunk) as well as granola clusters (vanilla cinnamon and vanilla caramel). There may be cross contamination between the different granola bar and cluster varieties.
Ingredients used on this line include: pure oats, crisp rice (2 varieties), brown rice syrup, brown sugar, 100% pure expeller pressed canola oil, semi-sweet chocolate chips, 70% dark chocolate chunks, diced dried apples, cinnamon, organic cocoa, raisins, and natural vanilla flavoring.
The Ingredients/Trail Mix Line
This line produces and/or packages all trail mixes and baking ingredients. There may be cross contamination between the trail mixes and ingredients.
The ingredients used on this line are: Semi-sweet chocolate chips, 70% dark chocolate chunks, cherry fruit chips, diced dried apples, raisins, 100% pure expeller pressed canola oil, sea salt, and dry roasted soybeans.
